There are many variations on this design, with the most important being the "direct heated" or "self-energizing" system. In the self-energizing design, a direct-fired heater is used and the air entering the system is limited to that required for combustion. An amount of air equal to the combustion air is bled from the system at the other end of the process. The gas (mainly products of combustion) is recycled through the dryer. The recycled gas has a very low oxygen content, making it suitable for materials that cannot be exposed to oxygen, due to explosive hazard or product degradation. This Semi Closed Cycle Dryer design is a hybrid configuration of both open and closed cycle dryers and it is not gas tight.

These Multiple-Stage Drying Systems are used for a wide range of polymer products.

It is the combination of spray dryer and fluid bed dryer, fluid bed dryer can be used for removal of the surface moisture while a drying system providing longer residence time would be used for removal of bound moisture. For example, a fluid bed dryer can be used as the second drying stage. Multi stage drying system is formed when a quantity of a solid particulate substance (usually present in a product container) is placed under appropriate conditions to cause the solid / binding agent mixture to behave as a fluid. This is usually achieved by the introduction of pressurized fluid through the particulate medium. These results in the product move up and down and disperse into the air between the filter bag housing and the product container. The resulting phenomenon is called fluidization.
